Australia is moving towards another important grain export period, creating opportunities for exporters of grains, pulses and chickpeas to prepare their logistics early.
The latest ABARES outlook forecasts Australia's 2026–27 winter crop at around 61 million tonnes, which would still make it the fourth-largest crop on record. Barley production is forecast at 16.4 million tonnes, while chickpea production is expected to be just over 1 million tonnes.
As the export season progresses, demand for suitable 20GP containers can become an important consideration for grain and pulse exporters.
For commodities such as chickpeas and other food products, exporters also need containers that are suitable for the cargo. Clean, dry and odour-free food-quality equipment can be important for protecting product quality during the international journey.
This means exporters should consider more than freight rates when planning upcoming shipments. Equipment availability, container quality, regional positioning, detention time, transport, loading schedules and vessel space should all be reviewed early.
Australia also continues to strengthen grain quality and storage standards. The new voluntary Grain Storage Assets and Management Standard (GSAMS) scheme commenced in July 2026, supporting confidence in Australian grain storage, management and quality systems.
