India remains an important market for Australian exporters of scrap metal and recyclable materials, creating opportunities for businesses shipping stainless steel, aluminium, copper and other metallic scrap.
However, scrap metal exports require more than simply arranging a container and booking a vessel. Understanding India's inspection, documentation and import requirements is an important part of preparing a successful shipment.
Understanding PSIC Requirements
A Pre-Shipment Inspection Certificate (PSIC) is used to support India's import controls for metallic waste and scrap, including checks relating to radioactive materials and other prohibited items.
Under India's latest DGFT update dated 21 October 2026, eligible metallic scrap originating from Australia may qualify for a PSIC exemption when entering through designated Indian seaports, including Mundra, JNPT and Chennai.
The exemption is subject to conditions, including supplier certification and mandatory safety checks at the Indian port of entry. Eligible shipments cleared through Inland Container Depots may also benefit where the requirements are met.
For shipments that require PSIC, arranging inspections before loading and coordinating the necessary documentation can help avoid last-minute complications.
Get Your Scrap Exports Moving
Before arranging a shipment, exporters should consider:
- Scrap type, HS code and cargo weight
- Destination port and applicable PSIC requirements
- Inspection and documentation arrangements
- Shipping line acceptance and container suitability
- Loading, transport and vessel cut-off dates
Confirming these details early allows exporters to plan their shipments more efficiently.
