Heatwave Crunch: Soaring Temperatures Pump Up Australia’s Reefer Imports

Australia’s early-season heatwave has triggered an unexpected surge in cold-chain imports, placing renewed pressure on reefer availability across national ports.

With domestic supply of fruit, vegetables and temperature-sensitive FMCG under strain due to heat stress, importers are leaning heavily on Southeast Asian and New Zealand produce — boosting reefer volumes into Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Carriers report strong demand for 40RH inbound units, with short-term shortages emerging in some depots as boxes are turned quickly to meet supermarket and foodservice requirements. At the same time, high temperatures have increased power consumption and monitoring requirements at terminal reefer plug points, creating occasional bottlenecks.

The surge is also influencing pricing dynamics. Increased reefer utilisation has pushed some carriers to limit ad-hoc bookings or apply priority-loading charges for high-volume importers. Transport operators are reporting tighter delivery windows due to reduced plug capacity during peak afternoon heat periods.

For exporters, the tight inbound flow may present indirect challenges as empty reefer availability becomes inconsistent. Agricultural exporters — particularly meat, seafood and dairy shippers — may need to adjust loading plans to align with depot equipment cycles.

🛠️ How Aussie Importers and Exporters Can Respond

    • Importers: pre-book reefer slots and equipment earlier than usual.
    • Adjust delivery plans around terminal plug capacity and peak heat periods.
    • Exporters: forecast volumes in advance to secure outbound R/H equipment.
    • Work closely with carriers to prioritise essential cold-chain cargo.
